UTSUROI
UTSUROI—the perception that everything changes slowly over time.
For the Japanese, more so than for people in the West, there is a sense that UTSUROI is something to be cherished.
This feeling is conspicuous in Japanese crafts that work with natural materials,
whether woodcraft, ceramics, lacquerware, dyeing, weaving, painting, or architecture.
UTSUROI is an important idea in my work.
My abiding prayer, on completing a work using bark and lacquer, is that it will commence to slowly change and display beautiful, unexpected qualities.
